Here is one I made today Frankenstein (Frankie)

Suppose I should give you my initial impression about the Cintiq. First Ferk the box is massive and it really does take two strong people to lift it out and onto its resting place ( the desk). Some of the plastic covers feel cheap and well plasticy, so you have to watch where you place your hands while moving it around. You also need to make sure you have a large surface to place it on as it isn’t that small ( nice sized drawing board). I noticed that there was only one cd with the drivers on I half expected some LITE or even demo cds of popular painting packages like you get with the Bamboo series, etc ( yes I know they maybe assume you have all the apps you can paint with already hence why you are buying this device, but that isn’t always the case) . Mainly for those that only use photoshop and would like to test/ try PainterX etc , but never mind.

Once the device is turned on and connected to the computer you will notice that the pen isnt aligned to the cursor so if its set to your main screen you will need to use a mouse or keyboard to sign in. Calibrating the device took about 5 attempts mainly because while hitting the + on each corner the top right one kept on saying I hit it even though I wasn’t there yet, yes it is sensitive for sure. Once set up it worked as I expected and once I found and set up the display toggle I was set up for life ( basically means you can hit a mapped button on the Cintiq which turns the tablet into a regular wacom for use on the 2nd screen so no need to dive to a mouse etc).  My only concern with the device is the lack of screen protectors in the market, I have wrote to a few companies like ZAGG to ask when they are making them for this model and I have yet to hear from them. I am really conscious about scratching the surface. I haven’t noticed any Lag with the device, but earlier today it froze, nothing worked on it and I had to turn the device off for a moment to solve it. I don’t know what went on, but I will be noting it down when (if) it does it again. Some people are mentioning the lack of being able to rotate the screen like you can on the “smaller” models, well to be honest this thing is massive and I can see why they omitted that feature from this model. I for one don’t have the physical space to perform a rotate , plus I would prob break it trying to anyway LOL. There is no need to perform a physical rotate anymore when most of the applications I use have that feature built in so no need to do it off screen and the Cintiq uses one of the three wheel buttons to activate this software feature. The only other nitpik thing is if you want to rest your non- drawing hand next to the buttons, with a around the side grip you have to squeeze in and around the paddles.  The device doesn’t get that warm which surprised me as I have heard they can get warm. Overall I am really happy with the purchase and have noticed how it has changed the way I work forever now. I do keep touching the screen and flicking across drawings etc like a fool, so an instant improvement would be touch screen . Well that is my first reactions to having finally got it installed and running. Hope it is of some use to you. Oh and yes they are expensive but if you earn money using drawing and painting packages, etc then you will make your money back with a smile on your face, as it is the most natural way of doing it on the computer (imho until we get touch screens ofcourse).

Edit : As I wrote about the lack of Software bundled earlier and James added that he got 2 cds with his. I checked and yes there is a software bundle as I thought there would be but only for the Americas ( as I have found out so far I am still looking into it). So why not the UK I know we have software bundles for the other wacom models.  Maybe its too early in the product life and someone hasn’t sorted it out yet. I shall continue to check and update this post when I find something out.

Edit number 2:  I have found out that once you register your Wacom Cintiq 24″ HD on the site you have a choice between one app out of three. Adobe photoshop elements 9, autodesk sketchbook express or corel painter sketchpad . once you have downloaded one of the apps the other two are no longer available for downloading. So bottom line is we do get software just not on a CD and no bundle as you can only have one of them (BAH).
